A transport war

Julius Bono ( Bo-na) fought a very different kind of war. He served 4 years in the army air corps during world war two. He didn’t fly in a bomber, or fighter plane but a C-47 ( Sky Train). A defenseless airplane that is well known as the plane which dropped paratroopers out of the sky, and as commercial airline after the war.

They flew missions alone, to support the front lines, hopping from island to island all over the Pacific. Often the first planes to land, Julius shares a very different war story which is often overlooked.

Walt Auxter gives us a better understanding of why Memorial Day is sometimes a daily routine for many veterans. Walt was born in Fremont, Ohio and served with the 44th Division, 324 Inf, Company F which was comprised of many Fremont natives. Walt talks in depth about a close friend who was killed. A memory that has never faded, as Walt thinks of him daily… and visits his grave on a regular basis.

Kathryn Vadas was born in New Jersey and moved to Toledo,OH shortly after World War Two.  Kathryn served in the 6th WAC ( Women’s Army Corps ). She found herself firing anti-aircraft guns, and in the presence of Eleanor Roosevelt while in Washington DC. The war eventually took her overseas serving in SHAEF ( Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force ) located in Bushey Park, England.

Don Clees hailed from Detroit, Michigan and knew he wanted to join the Army Air Corps. His story gives vivid details about b-29’s and the training involved. His crew opted out of leave after 15 missions, hoping they would get home sooner. Well as luck would have it then ended up flying 4 more missions then they were required…. they flew 39. Don gives a real insightful look at the air war over Japan, and talks in length about  his crew. Read more
