Toledo project tells veterans’ stories

Toledo-area war veterans no longer need to let textbooks tell their stories. Instead, residents and students can hear and see their narratives and learn from their experiences.

Late in 2007, Toledo natives Chris Wulf and Rick Neeley discovered their shared passion for history and began asking area war veterans to convey their stories. They founded History Documented, and gave local veterans the opportunity to document their war experiences. Read more

Career Soldier

Bob Shake served our country from 1942-1945, and 1947-1964.  His long career, presented us with a wonderful first hand account of World War Two. He first saw action in Sicily, then Italy, France and Germany. When the war in Europe had ended, Bob had over 100 points and should have been able to return home. Instead he was reassigned and served as Military Police in the Pacific. Read more

Thompson “Sub Machine Gun”

The Thompson Sub machine Gun was designed by General John T. Thompson, who was inspired by the trench warfare of World War I to develop a “one-man, hand-held machine gun”, firing a rifle caliber round. Read more

M1 Carbine

In 1938, the Chief of Infantry requested the Ordnance Department develop a lightweight rifle or carbine, though the formal requirement for the weapon type was not approved until 1940. Read more
